Creating flow in your Pilates classes

WHAT IS FLOW IN A PILATES CLASS?

"Having a focus for your class helps you make good exercise choices.

A theme can also help you to create classes that flow well.” Tania Huddart

Creating flow in a class relies on you considering your exercises, the positions people are moving into and how to create transitions between the exercises and those positions.

I like to think of flow as telling a movement-story.

In the beginning, I encourage my students to think of our human development.

Follow the actions a baby goes through from

  • lying on their back (breathing and alignment focus supine)
  • Lifting their head (abdominal exercises using forward flexion)
  • Rolling from side to side (obliques and side-lying hip strengthening, thoracic rotation, side bend lift etc.)
  • Lying prone (extension actions for spine and legs)
  • Sitting ( saw, torso twist, spine stretch, mermaid etc)
  • Four-point kneel - cat-cow, side flexion, thread the needle etc.
  • High kneel to standing and include some balance work.

Later you can get more creative and change things around and create classes that focus on breathing, spinal motion, hip strengthening, alignment or whatever else your clients need to feel strong, flexible and successful.
